The Sichuan Earthquake at a magnitude 8.0 occurred at 14:28 on 12 May 2008 in Sichuan province of China. The epicenter was 80 km West-northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, with a depth of 19 km. The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing ( 1,500 km away), where office buildings swayed with the tremor. The earthquake was also felt in nearby countries.
Official figures state that 32,477 are confirmed dead, including 31,978 in Sichuan province, and 220,109 injured. The numbers of the death toll might raise up to 50,000, the Chinese government warned.
The officials declared May 19-21,2008 as National mourning days for this natural catastrophe.
